Therapeutic Applications of Mindfulness in Role-Playing Games
A presentation by Jessie Duncan MA, LPC, NCC, CTP (she/they) (CASTT Gamers)
About this Event
Mindfulness is a phase that is often used in wellness and self-care contexts, but is often confusing. This presentation explores the history of mindfulness, the development of mindfulness-based psychotherapies (MBTs), with a specific focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and how these techniques can be utilized in tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs). Therapeutic use of TTRPGs has been increasing, and this presentation will provide attendees examples of how to develop mindfulness-based interventions at the individual, couples, and group settings. There will also be a discussion of cultural considerations when integrating mindfulness-based techniques.
Objectives:
- Explain the history of mindfulness and mindfulness based therapies (MBT)
- Describe Acceptance and commitment therapy
- Examine cultural considerations when utilizing mindfulness interventions
- Assess Tabletop Role Playing Games (TTRPGs) and how to craft interventions with them in individual, couples, and group settings
