About this Event

Though common among geek and gamer circles for years, virtual spaces have become a reality for the rest of the population since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, despite geek and gamer familiarity as well as the benefit of anonymity, there are still instances where remaining distant and silent in virtual spaces seems preferable. Whether lurking in Twitch chat, quietly observing a Discord server, or struggling to find a raid party in an LFG (Looking for Group post), many may choose to avoid potentially pleasurable activities because of hesitations with online community interaction. Mental health professionals have long concerned themselves with creating safe spaces and building positive clinical relationships. But what do these modern considerations tell us about comfort in virtual spaces and the potential clinical implications surrounding online interactions?

Learning Objectives:

1. Help attendees recognize online communication mediums and the evolution of virtual spaces.

2. Propose reasons why a person may avoid online communication and consider variables for future research.

3. Explore “sense of belonging” as a mental health concept and consideration for its inclusion in treatment planning.
