From Final Girls to Soft Girls: Exploring the Black Female Identity in Film and TV
A presentation by Dr Mercedes Samudio LCSW (She/Her) (CEO, Shame Proof Parenting)
About this Event
The workshop will explore the history of Black female (femme) characters in 90s/00s film & tv. While this era has become mainstream over the past few years, what has been noticeably absent is a discussion on how the Black female identity contributed to this era’s distinct aesthetic and nostalgia. We’ll discuss the Black female identity in this era, the research on Black female mental health, and the intersection of these ideas in working with this population. Attendees will learn skills in assessment for racial trauma, a connection technique, and treatment considerations for exploring this character profile in your clinical work.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand how media representation can influence mental and emotional health for this population.
- Assess for racial trauma through use of an evidence based measurement scale.
- Develop therapeutic alliance skills through use of mindfulness-based intervention
- Learn an innovative modality to treat racial trauma in a clinical setting.
