About this Event

Key videogames can have an impact on one's social life, political views, and self-concept, especially as the cultural and societal significance of videogames becomes more clear as the medium matures. This session examines the growing trend of personal narrative writing centered around specific games that have had significance in the author's life and the therapeutic implications of this form of narrative, including how personally meaningful games can serve as tools for narrative therapy.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe current biographical written works centered around gaming and classify some of the common roles these games play in developing one's personal narrative.
  2. Discuss how gaming can act as a narrative therapy tool by allowing clients to engage in a vast array of different narratives in an interactive way.
  3. Explain some of the benefits and limitations of using gaming to understand one's life narrative.
  4. Compare and contrast this narrative approach for different developmental and life stages, and with different game types.
  5. Engage in a short guided writing session about a significant game in participants' lives.
